Volvo EX90 - Volvo's flagship all-electric SUV

The Volvo EX90 is expected to set a new safety standard for the brand, which is famous for the safety of its vehicles.

The Volvo EX90 is not a replacement for the current XC90. The Swedish brand has confirmed that they will continue to upgrade the XC90 running on the previous engine for a while, to serve users until they transform into a 100% all-electric brand from 2030 onwards.

Regarding the Volvo EX90, the all-new large electric SUV is confirmed to be the safest vehicle in the company's history. The reason they are so confident is because of the presence of Lidar technology as a default on all configurations, allowing the car to recognize pedestrians at a distance of up to 250 meters.

In addition, this equipment combined with the sensor placed on the windshield and the external camera system also gives the Volvo EX90 level 3 self-driving technology. This is the first platform for the company to be able to apply level 4 self-driving cars (almost no need for user operation) in the future.

Another radar system placed in the interior is used to warn users, avoiding the situation of leaving children and pets in the car leading to heat shock.

Regarding the transmission system, the Volvo EX90 defaults to using a 2-motor drive configuration to create a 2-wheel drive system with a capacity of 408 horsepower, 770Nm of torque on the standard version, 510 horsepower and 910Nm on the high-end Performance version.

The 107 kWh battery provides a range of 600km per charge, while supporting 2 reverse charging technologies for external devices and fast charging 10 - 80% in 30 minutes

The Volvo EX90 design has been announced before through the Volvo Recharge concept (2021), so the images provided by the company at the official car launch only add more angles that allow us to observe each detail more clearly along with some more practical changes made, such as the tailgate is now placed forward instead of backwards as before.

The Volvo EX90 interior, similar to the exterior, is almost completely carried over from the concept version. In the center of the dashboard is a giant 14.5-inch vertical screen, where users control almost all of the car's features.

In front of the driver is a smaller digital dashboard. The number of mechanical buttons appearing in the Volvo EX90 cabin is very small.

A highlight of the Volvo EX90 is that the materials used in the car have a significant proportion of being environmentally friendly. 15% of the car is made from recycled steel, 25% from recycled aluminum and recycled plastic. Bio-based materials also account for 15% of the total plastic used in the car (48kg) - both of which are the highest rates in the company's history.

However, just looking at the interior and exterior of the car, we cannot recognize this factor because the luxury is no different from normal.

The car's operating system is Google Android Automotive OS, with many available utilities such as software updates over the network and voice control capabilities.

The car is also equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay for owners using iOS devices as well as 5G connectivity. The 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Dolby Atmos system first appeared on a Volvo model, the EX90.

The Volvo EX90 is also the first model that users can buy 100% online or go to the dealer themselves. The car also has a variety of ownership options from outright purchase, lease or subscription.

Volvo has just confirmed that it will launch the EX90 in early 2024. Previously, the car was expected to be delivered to customers in 2023, but the plan had to change because the company needed time to complete the software.

The car has a starting price of 76,695 USD. This number is 1.5 times higher than the XC90 in the same US market, but is still considered reasonable because the car has a lot of equipment and amenities.

Specifically, the lowest version Twin Motor Plus has the signature Thor's hammer LED headlights, decorative glossy black trim and 20-inch alloy wheels. Automatic wipers and panoramic sunroof. The interior has a 9-inch digital dashboard and a 14.5-inch central infotainment screen, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.

Some of the equipment available on this version include 8-way power front seats, heated front/rear seats, power-folding third row seats, HUD screen, wireless charging, 14 Bose speakers, heated steering wheel, wood trim, 4-zone automatic air conditioning. Users can upgrade the second row of seats to business class seats (2 single seats) for $500.

The safety array of the Volvo EX90, even from the lowest version, is almost complete. Intelligent cruise control, lane keeping assist/lane departure warning, collision avoidance steering assist, rear cross-traffic warning, automatic emergency braking, automatic road sign recognition and intelligent self-driving support using Lidar (the main reason for the car's slow launch) are some examples.

The higher-end version of the Volvo EX90 is called Twin Motor Ultra. This version adds suction doors, air suspension, 21-inch wheels, front seats with massage function and 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system.

Volvo "delays" 10 safety and convenience features when delivering EX90 electric car to customers

Volvo EX90 buyers in the US are expected to receive their cars in the second half of the year without 10 features compared to the original announcement, including 4 advanced safety and driver assistance (ADAS) features.

Volvo finally began producing the EX90 this month. The Swedish automaker (now owned by Chinese automaker Geely) had to delay the launch of this electric car to fix some software bugs.

The delivery of the car can only take place in the second half of the year, and the Volvo EX90 may reach customers without some features compared to the company's introduction.

According to the content of an email sent by Volvo to customers, there are 10 safety and convenience features that will be temporarily unavailable on the EX90, such as all features of the LiDAR sensor system that will be enabled later.

Other features that may be absent include cross-traffic and pedestrian warnings, cornering assist, wireless Apple CarPlay, and two-way charging.

Owners will have to make do with a dark-colored infotainment screen and dashboard, with a light-colored display coming in a future update.

Users will also have to accept that the electric vehicle will lose 3 percent of its battery capacity each day when parked without charging. Volvo says the EX90's main computer is currently forced to run on a dark background to control advanced features, but that this issue will be fixed in a future update.

Power usage will end after 72 hours when the vehicle enters "deep sleep" mode to conserve battery power.

Volvo has not yet provided an exact answer on when these features will be added.

In an email to customers, the company said that most of the missing features will be added via over-the-air (OTA) software updates. However, some customers may have to take their cars to the company's service center.

The Volvo EX90 shares the SPA2 electric vehicle platform with the Polestar 3. The overall design of the EX90 is very similar to the XC90. The car is 5,037mm long, 1,964mm wide and 1,747mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,985mm. This parameter is slightly longer and wider than the XC90.

The standard version has a capacity of 408 horsepower and 770Nm of torque, while the Performance version has a capacity of 510 horsepower and 910Nm of torque.

All versions of the Volvo EX90 are introduced with standard Lidar technology, with the ability to detect pedestrians from up to 250m away and has level 3 autonomous driving capabilities thanks to a sensor mounted above the windshield.
